The ferry from West Vancouver will bring you to Langdale, at the southern end of the lower Sunshine Coast. Langdale and neighbouring Port Mellon are largely residential communities, with Langdale being home to the ferry terminal, while Port Mellon is home to the state of the art Howe Sound Pulp and Paper Mill. ![]() View towards Port Mellon from the Ferry This pulp mill is the oldest operating pulp mill in British Columbia; it has been operating since 1908! However, it is designed with the latest technology, minimizing air pollution, so that the local area enjoys fresh ocean air. Free public tours of the mill are conducted several times a week in the summer months, and by request the rest of the year. (Note: The minimum age for this tour is 12 years, and closed toe footwear must be worn.) Next door to the pulp mill, you'll find the Hillside Demonstration Forest, an education center focusing on silviculture and harvesting practices, as well as wildlife preservation. Port Mellon is a convenient launching spot for kayaking to nearby Gambier and Keats Islands, or further up Howe Sound. Langdale also offers camping sites, RV sites and a Par 3 golf course. |
